What do you do at Pulse?

I teach Zumba Dance Fitness. I also enjoy participating in both Pop Pilates for strength training and other Dance fitness classes at Pulse to help keep the spirit of dance alive in me.

What’s your background in dance, fitness or both?

From a young age, I have pretty much always been involved in some sort of activity that involved fitness. I discovered my love and passion for the art of dance at the ripe old age of 23. I graduated with a BFA in Dance from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Wa. in 2000 and went on to perform with many local, regional modern and ballet companies in the Seattle area. Most notably, I danced for several years with Spectrum Dance Theater, a Contemporary/Jazz Dance Company and completed 4 contracts with the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line Entertainment Division dancing in their broadway style production shows.

What’s your favorite thing about Pulse?

When I first discovered Pulse, my mind was blown! The space, the music, the lights, the stage, the variety of classes, the amazing high quality instructors, and of course the comradery of it’s community. 🙂

What’s your favorite song, class, or routine?

I honestly have so many favorites in all these categories. I am, however, drawn to Zumba classes because I CANNOT live without my latin rhythms and songs. One song that pulls so many emotions and strength out of me is called Valio la Pena by Marc Anthony. I’ve described dancing to this song like dancing an “Epic Movie”.

What is your guilty pleasure?

I moved to Portland almost 6 years ago now and absolutely love that there is such an abundance of resale stores here. My guilty pleasure is “hunting” for and finding authentic Mexican folk art which my little studio apartment is completely and utterly decked out in. 🙂

Can you describe a favorite memory of an experience at Pulse?

The memory of being able to take classes during the shutdown stands out to me. I remember being worried about not being able to dance and wondering what I was gonna try and do in it’s place. Then I logged into my first class on Zoom, which the Pulse staff worked so hard on making happen, and I was so happy. Those classes on Zoom literally helped me keep my emotional and mental health so stable through such difficult times. It also showed me how absolutely dedicated to it’s community the Pulse staff is.

Lastly, how would you describe PulsePDX to someone that you know would enjoy it here?

First I would describe the space and atmosphere of Pulse’s dance studio space. Space at Pulse is probably one of the biggest I’ve ever encountered. It truly does give me that “Nightclub” experience. I love the fact that the instructors teach from a stage that makes them easily visible. Then of course I would have to mention the idea of that “Pulse Magic” feeling. It truly is a thing. I’ve left with it several times myself.
