What do you do at Pulse?

Host weeknight dance club hours featuring world beatz a la hip hop and U-Jam!

What’s your background in dance, fitness, or both?

In college, I danced competitively with hip hop crews, which left a huge void in my life after graduation. For several years, I battled with my weight and tried everything to keep it at bay, which is where I found Zumba. I was incredibly excited to find a format that appeased my goals with the movement of dance.

After moving to the Bay Area, however, I noticed a number of unfamiliar dance fitness formats, one of which was U-Jam Fitness. It lured me in with a promise of urban funk that resonated more strongly with my hip hop background; and I was hooked, line and sinker. No looking back. I’ve been an instructor for 5 years now, and have had the absolute privilege of learning from some of the best OG instructors in each of the last 3 cities I’ve been to.

What’s your favorite thing about Pulse?

First and foremost, the family-feel. There is ZERO pretense at this establishment; and everyone is incredibly genuine and welcoming. Whenever I have the pleasure of dancing at Pulse as a teacher or student, it’s like I’m out having fun with a bunch of friends!

What’s your favorite song, class, or routine?

The ones that get you all sorts of sweaxy…! 😉

What’s your “guilty pleasure” (as long as it’s PG-rated)?

ALLLLLL the rice noodles!!!! Ooh, and ice cream. And GF pizza. And sweet potato fries! I have absolutely no control. I’m that kid who has to order his own at a “family style” dinner, otherwise ain’t no one getting seconds.

Can you describe your favorite memory of an experience at Pulse?

My favorite memories are: 1) experiencing the incredibly diverse and high caliber of talent during a Memorial Day instructor expo, and 2) seeing my students lose themselves in dance during their favorite routine.

Lastly, how would you describe PulsePDX to someone that you know would enjoy it here?

A vending machine of fitness classes with lights, a disco ball, and a friendly staff that’s ready to get down and dirty.
