What do you do at Pulse?
What’s your background in dance, fitness, or both?
My journey in fitness started several years ago when I decided to try a Zumba class at a local gym, before that I had only known fitness to be at home workouts, treadmills and ellipticals and that just didn’t excite me. I had always loved to dance so incorporating it as a fitness routine was the perfect motivation to get me moving. Fast forward a couple of years and many group fitness classes later, in 2011 I found PulsePDX, where the fun level and my class attendance multiplied! I attended as many dance cardio classes as possible and tried every new strength format they offered. In 2013 Pulse introduced Pound and I was hooked from that very first class! Little did I know that I had an inner rock star that needed to be unleased! I loved the freedom of drumming to the beat and found that I was having so much fun that I almost forgot how many lunges and squats I was doing! In years past, I had had two abdominal surgeries so my core strength was very weak. Pound helped build back up my core strength and gave me confidence I didn’t know I needed. After almost five years of loving this format as a student I decided I needed to take my journey to another level and become an instructor. I wanted to be a part of the incredible community, and I wanted to share Pound and it’s benefits with as many people as possible! Now I have the amazing opportunity to teach this format two times a week and I’m giddy every single time that warm up track starts! Come rock out with me!
What’s your favorite thing about Pulse?
Just one?! There’s so much I love about Pulse. I love the community feeling that you can’t find anywhere else, the encouragement, the support and literally no judgment, and that it’s for everyone regardless of age or fitness level. I love all of the amazing people I have met through Pulse who have become my friends, and all of the different fitness formats. And who doesn’t love the nightclub atmosphere with no mirrors, where you can let go of your inhibitions and really get into your workout?
What’s your favorite song, class, or routine?
To pick one song, class or routine is impossible! I love them all! I love how different all of the classes are and that all of the instructors at Pulse bring their own style and flavor! One of my favorite routine’s teaching Pound is “Killing in the Name Of” because it’s the epitome of rocking out while you workout!
What’s your “guilty pleasure” (as long as it’s PG-rated)?
Reality TV….please don’t judge me. Amazing Race is one of my favorites.
Can you describe your favorite memory of an experience at Pulse?
Probably dancing onstage with Jennifer and Julio for the first time….it took me awhile, after dancing in the back of class, but when I finally got up there, it was electrifying and everyone made me feel so welcome and comfortable that I forgot I was dancing in front a bunch of people! Also the Pound Masterclass with the creators of Pound was epic and memory I’ll never forget!
Lastly, how would you describe PulsePDX to someone that you know would enjoy it here?
I would tell them they have to come give it try, and that they would love the welcoming, supportive environment and the friendly fitness community we have. I would tell them that the experience at Pulse is unlike any gym or studio that they have been to and that we have some of the best instructors in Portland. But I would tell them to be careful because PulsePDX can be addictive!
